DAY 1- EXHIBITION
Hong Kong. April 9, 2004. The dawning of the Hong Kong Toycon in the post-Michael Lau era.
Plug In Toys, April 2004 marks a significant departure from the routine of the premiere designer toy event of the past 3 years. This season's "Plug In Hollywood" show is home to some of the same exhibitors (although far fewer of them) as in shows past, but also features a few events new to the series. This reorganization is undoubtedly a reaction to the waning attendance of the 2003 shows and the departure of HK designer toy (cult of) personality, Michael Lau.
The theme of the show is clearly "Hollywood." The entrance has been dressed with red carpet and string lights that hint at movie theater atmosphere, and the show's main attraction is an exhibition of hand-made figures based on the favorite movies of Hong Kong's current crop of toy artists. A total of 24 participants, including long time favorites Eric So, Jason Siu, Elphonso Lam and Kenny, William & Winson (of Brothersfree) displayed an amazing variety of style and technique. As one might expect, a large portion of the efforts are in the form of 12" figures with custom-built heads, clothing and accessories. There were some truly impressive scratch-built and found-object sculptures as well.
