| Fifty24SF and Upper Playground
officially released its new Dithers
DVD project last month, with a party at San
Francisco's 111 Minna Gallery. A "visual
commentary" about contemporary American
art, Dithers profiles thirty innovative
US-based artists with an emphasis on graffiti,
skate subculture and graphics. Followers of
urban art will recognize many of the names,
including Seen, Quik, Stash, Zephyr, Shepard
Fairey, Dave Kinsey, and Ricky Powell; in
addition, the DVD profiles emerging talents
such as Bigfoot, Sam Flores, Jeremy Fish,
David Choe, Dalek, Andy Howell, Dug One, Giant,
Tiffany Bozic and others. Giving plenty of
room for the artists to discuss their work,
plus visual references of their art, Dithers
is watchable and insightful all around.
The party at 111 Minna included a (brief
due to technical difficulties) screening
of the DVD, but the centerpiece was a live
painting by Sam Flores,
Bigfoot, David
Choe, Andy Howell
and Jeremy Fish. Each artist
contributed their distinctive styles to
the large canvas, which progressed throughout
the night as the crowd got bigger and more
lubricated. Upper Playground's Walrus was
in the house, as was independent shoemaker
JB, the editors of Vapors
and Three Zero's Kim Fung Wong.
And much like the mythical creature, Bigfoot
himself proved impossible to photograph
clearly.
The DVD was not available for sale at
the show, but can now be ordered online
directly from Upper
Playground.
