Japan's premier figure production house is a long-time Toycon supporter, and was back in force this December. In addition to the producing another Toycon Be@rbrick series, Medicom had a booth presence all their own under the aegis of their HK distributor Fonca Ltd. Featuring toy projects with US artists KAWS, Stash and SSUR, Medicom demonstrated their growing position as Japan's boutique toymaker extraordinaire.
* Toycon Be@rbrick Series 3: Following the pattern of the previous Toycon editions, Medicom and the Toycon Committee commissioned three noted designers to produce two color variants of their own Be@rbrick design. This series features "So Fun", an askew-faced bear by Eric So; "Strange Numbers" by Medicom's own Ryu Akashi, and the karate-uniformed "Grapple" by Cro-Magnon's Narue Oka. * Stash Kubricks: A major attraction at the Toycon, Medicom released three versions of NY graffiti artist Stash's spraycan Kubricks each day of the Toycon. Day 1 featured the Stash 1000% version (standing appx. 2 feet tall), Day 2 a 400% version and Day 3 an internet-only regular sized version. All were limited edition, and sold out immediately. * Apethoven Bust: Designed by Ruslan Karablin a.k.a. SSUR, Apethoven follows last year's Che-inspired "Ape Rebel" Kubrick into adventurous combinations of Planet of the Apes and iconic cultural references. * KAWS Kubrick sets: Already available in Hong Kong and Japan, Medicom showcased their new Kubrick project with graffiti artist KAWS. The sets feature the KAWS signature head figure, a companion cat figure and a NY-style bus stop. * Special Forces SAS Operation Squad Kubricks: New additions to the Kubrick Special Forces series, this time with an accompanying assault vehicle. * Be@rbrick Series 5: The latest edition of the growing Be@rbrick series, featuring an Italian flag figure, a clown, and a host of designer figures including NY-based Futura. |
